About Cameron Yuki Ceramics
Welcome to Cameron Yuki Ceramics! I’m passionate about creating handcrafted crystalline ceramic pieces that bring beauty and a bit of wonder to everyday spaces. Operating from my home studio in Newcastle, Washington (in the Seattle area), I blend traditional ceramic techniques with technical glaze chemistry to create vibrant, crystalline works of art.
My Story
My clay journey began in 2015, and while I've been making pottery ever since, I finally decided to dedicate myself to it in 2024. With a background in plant biology and horticulture, and a Master’s degree in the field, I approach ceramics with the lens of growth and experimentation. Crystalline glazes are mesmerizing, but they're not easy to achieve - behind every successful pot are hundreds of tests. To me, the ceramic vessel is a substrate for crystals to germinate and bloom, and with each firing, I learn a little bit more.
The Process
The journey from raw clay to finished art demands experience and precision. After wheel-throwing and trimming a piece, the first layers of color are applied as underglazes or slips that I mix myself. The pot then undergoes a bisque firing before the glaze application. The crystalline finishes require custom ingredient formulations and a controlled, complex firing schedule. This allows crystal structures to bloom natively inside the kiln, with each change in temperature modifying crystal shape and color. After the glaze firing, pieces can be submerged in an acid solution, which helps bring contrast to some crystalline surfaces. Lastly, some pieces will be fired one additional time in a gas kiln, where the reduction environment (lack of oxygen) will shift colors, produce lustrous surfaces, and allow the path of the flames to leave their own mark on the pots.
